NASA will launch a new rover to Mars in 2020. That plan was among the science news NASA made at the 2012 Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco. Also, Voyager 1 travels "magnetic highway"; Van Allen Probes reveal structures and dynamics in Earth's radiation belts; Kelly and Kornienko on mission; new ISS crew; astro Joe goes social; Curious in Times Square; fainting booms; Climate Day; and, more!

'EVPmaker' SESSION [8.14.2010 (updated 11.9.2010)]

An "EVP" is supposed to stand for "Electronic Voice Phenomena". The theory goes that with a recorder, preferably digital, a 'ghost' can use the white noise and speak to you; the recorder can capture something that our ears cannot hear. This is the first time trying the freeware "EVPmaker" program. It takes a WAV digital file and just mixes it all up. You could hook up a microphone to your computer and speak to the 'spirits' in real-time. Evidently, a 'spirit' can use the random gibberish and form words. I loaded the program with this "SpeakJetAllophones" WAV file, which sounds like the same robotic noise that the so-called "Ovilus" hardware devices use. I started this first test on August 14, 2010 at about 9:28 in the morning. The program was set to just continuously run through the allophones and I kept it going for just over a minute. I had a free audio-editor called "Audacity" running simultaneously. I recommend that software's usage when trying the "EVPmaker". Click record....click the button to start the "EVPmaker" playback...and see what happens. If a microphone is used, your statements would be recorded as well and the expectation is that you may hear a response to a question. When checking this out, I didn't have a microphone hooked-up. I just said a few things outloud. Soon, I started feeling silly and just assumed it was worthless anyway since I wasn't using a microphone, so I stopped. Playing back through "Audacity", it actually did appear that I was capturing ...

Recording is an art and often a matter of experience, and so what better way of gaining some understanding of what's involved than by listening to the prestigious American engineer Michael Wagener talk about his recording tips and secrets. Starting with mic placement for drums ... Michael Wagener: If you like rock in general and metal in particular, you probably know his name, because this engineer has worked with some of the most prestigious artists such as: Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, Queen, Alice Cooper, Megadeth, Helloween, Testament, Dokken, Mötley Crüe, Skid Row, Accept, Extreme, Janet Jackson, King's X. Quite simply, the list of albums and singles he has recorded or mixed is simply staggering... So when Royer Labs and Jukebox LTD invited us to meet him while he was in the studio with the band Cockpit, we jumped at the opportunity and decided to film the whole experience, to better show you how he does his thing. And needless to say, we weren't disappointed. We were even surprised. Not by Michael's skill (he has little to prove), but by his affable manner and willingness to share his wisdom. So, we were able to ask him almost anything we wanted about microphone placement, or about the gear he uses. The result is a kind of Masterclass, that we will unveil, episode by episode, in the coming weeks.
